CANADA – Do you enjoy fine art, animals, supporting local farmers and crafters, or want to improve life for neighbours in need? If you have as little as two hours to spare, you can volunteer for a cause that interests you and make a real difference. Chances are you’ll also have some fun and meet new people. In the spotlight this week are some of the many organizations urgently in need of volunteers in Alberta.
ElderDog in Edmonton is seeking people to foster dogs for seniors who are temporarily unable to care for their pets due to illness, injury, social isolation, etc. This non-profit is also seeking volunteers to assist with basic dog care so that seniors and their pets can stay together as long as possible. Volunteering usually involves dog walking, simple grooming, or delivering food provided by ElderDog.
COVID-19 YYC Community Helpers is seeking volunteers to deliver food bank hampers and other necessary items of daily living to households in need in the Calgary area. The recipients who rely on deliveries are unable to travel on Calgary Transit because of mobility issues and/or weakened immune systems. Volunteer shifts on weekdays are as short as two hours.
Contemporary Calgary needs volunteer Gallery Assistants to supervise the gallery during regular operation hours and enrich the visitor experience. Staff will help volunteers build on their interest in modern art to become knowledgeable of the current exhibitions. The gallery offers 3-hour shifts on a weekly or bi-weekly basis (excluding periods of closure for installation and de-installation).
The Sherwood Park Farmers Market is growing and needs volunteers to be Market Ambassadors. In this role, volunteers create a fun, energetic community environment while customers shop safely. As well, volunteers may be asked to assist the market manager with sanitizing and setup before the market opens, or takedown after it closes. The market runs every Wednesday from 2-7 p.m.
