Victoria, B.C. – Technological and scientific advances allow us to live longer than ever before, communicate almost instantaneously around the globe and explore outer space. Some would say we are in the midst of a second Renaissance, yet an estimated eight million children around the world will die this year from a lack of food, safe drinking water and adequate shelter.
Robert Loten, Managing Broker at Sutton - Advantage Property Management, is hoping to change the fate of these children, one family at a time.
Robert is focused on one of the poorest places on this continent: Nicaragua, where 30% of the population lives on less than $2 US per day and one-third of all households are led by single mothers.
When Robert saw the mothers and children struggling to survive, he was determined to make the greatest possible impact. He founded Madres de Nicaragua with the initial goal of helping up to 15 families in a specific, small community in central Nicaragua.
“Madres de Nicaragua is a registered, non-profit charitable organization that will generate income tax deduction receipts,” says Robert. “We work indirectly through Bridges to Community, an NGO, and with local nuns in a rural area called Hormiguero. They identify prospective mothers, confirm prospective recipients and follow up.”

Mothers who receive donations are required to provide vaccination certificates for their children and report cards of their school-age children.
“The monitoring of donations and the issuing of payments to mothers are done by volunteers, working with the bank in Nicaragua. Unlike other NGOs or charities, there is no overhead, no wages, salaries or expenses paid. All donations go to recipients, except for minor bank fund transfer fees.”
All donations are welcome, although Robert hopes donors will preauthorize $10 per month by debit or credit. For more information, please visit https://madredenicaragua.org.
