Langley, B.C. – In mid-March, when job layoffs began due to the pandemic, Michelle Perreault and her family set up a food shelter on their front lawn at 4039 205A Street in Langley. A sign on the shelter invited people to help themselves and even request specific items, if needed. The family did their best to keep it stocked with food staples as well as personal care items. After a local newspaper picked up this heart-warming news, Prospera Credit Union contacted Michelle and made a $500 grant for them to purchase more supplies.
“We have had an amazing response from the community,” says Michelle. “But we definitely are receiving more donations than the demand, so we have been able to share the excess food with other local charities.”
Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, Michelle and her husband Cody Lew were planning to build a ‘little library’ to put on their lawn. When businesses began closing due to COVID-19, they realized that many people in the community would suddenly find it difficult to afford groceries. They quickly finished the shelter box, installed it and filled the shelves. Michelle spread the word through social media, personal networks and on Sutton Spirit. They continue to stock the shelter.
Recently, the family decided that during lock-down, people might benefit from more than just food to fill their bellies. A great book can feed mind and spirit and they had piles of books ready to share. They set up a tall cabinet on their porch as a free library.
Michelle is happy to note, “We’ve had an outpouring of food and book donations. We’ve had many visitors use the food shelter and enjoy the library.”
She invites other to #lovethyneighbors, #spreadlove and #helpinghands.
