Vernon, BC – The less fortunate in the Vernon region will be a little warmer this winter thanks to Sutton Group – Lakefront Realty’s Warm and Fuzzy Shelter Collection. The drive was created by Broker Tamara Cinnamon and a team of dedicated REALTORS® in response to a dire need in the community. Each winter the homeless, the working poor, and those who rely on supportive services and shelters often lack adequate gloves, hats and coats as well as blankets or sleeping bags.
“We've had some wonderful donations come in,” reports Debbie Steenkamp, a long-term sales associate at Sutton Group – Lakefront Realty. “We had a grandma who made hats and mittens for children in different sizes and different colours. It's very heart-warming to do this every year.”
Vehicle after vehicle pulled into the office parking lot delivering items and the team pitched in to load up the truck. By mid-afternoon, it was nearly full!
All donations are delivered to the John Howard Society of British Columbia, which has operated in the central and south Okanagan for more than 60 years. This non-profit organization offers a range of services including affordable and supportive housing, employment programs, outreach programs, group activities, and restorative justice.
Preparations for the Warm and Fuzzy Shelter Collection began months ago with notices on the office Facebook page as well as individual promotion by staff and associates. Clients, friends and the public took the opportunity to drop off warm blankets and clothing for the Collection on November 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is so well supported, that REALTORS® from other companies have been known to contribute.
“For anyone who missed the official drop-off date, you are still welcome to bring donations to the office at 2749 - 30th Street in Vernon,” says Steenkamp.
